Instructions

Riturei is performed anytime you start or stop a training session with a partner. Training includes drilling techniques (uchikomi), practicing throwing (nagekomi), and sparring (randori). Each time you switch partners, you bow to the partner that you've finished training with and bow to your new partner before you start training with them.

In competitions, you perform a standing bow when you enter or leave the mat and when you enter or leave the competition area. Bowing may also be used as a formal greeting.

To perform a standing bow:

  1. Start standing with your arms by your side and your heels touching. Your palms should be touching the sides of your legs and there should be no space between your fingers.

  2. Bow about 30 degrees and slide your hands to the front of your thighs. Your hands should end up right above your kneecaps.

  3. Return to the standing position and slide your hands back to your sides.
